Three men …and a painting Art premiered at the Comédie des Champs-Elysées in Paris in 1994, starring Fabrice Luchini, Pierre Arditi and Pierre Vaneck. The playwright Yasmina Reza was awarded a 'Molière' as Best Author of the Year in 1995 for her sparkling script. The comedy ran for a year and a half in Paris and, later, with Christopher Hampton's fine translation, it most successfully ran for two years at Wyndham's Theatre in London. The play was produced by Sean Connery and David Pugh, and won both the 1997 Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy. Art had already become a hit in 25 countries before it opened on Broadway, where it received the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play. Last year, Dear Conjunction, a Paris-based company of British actors, now in its tenth year, performed Yasmina Reza's satirical masterpiece at Le Petit Hebertot in Paris with such enormous success that it ran for several months. Don't miss this deliciously funny comedy for the first time in Toulouse ! Art is the story of three middle-aged long-time friends who have always agreed on just about everything. But when Serge spends almost a year's salary (about $35,000) on a work of modern art -a minimalist painting at that- Marc violently opposes the buying of, what is to him, just a white canvas. Yvan, preoccupied with his upcoming wedding, is teetering, without committing himself, between the two extremes positions. He tries to calm the disagreement between his friends but, in trying to appease them, ignites the quarrel… Soon there are heated disputes, starting with the value of the painting and, developing to much more personal subjects, become increasingly passionate until the three men are forced to re-examine their friendship –its demands, its obligations, and ultimately, its rewards- and the direction in which it is going … Art sounds like a marriage of Molière and Woody Allen. A clever and hilarious comedy about friendship and values. Une histoire d'hommes … croquée avec humour et finesse sous la plume d'une femme Ils ont la cinquantaine. Aiment à se retrouver autour d'un bon repas ou pour "se faire une toile", quand leur emploi du temps le leur permet. Et savent à peu prés tout, ou du moins le pensent-ils, les uns des autres. Ils ? Serge, Marc et Yvan, trois hommes d'aujourd'hui, trois tempéraments, et trois amis inséparables depuis près de quinze ans… Jusqu’au jour où Serge fait l’acquisition d’une peinture contemporaine -un tableau abstrait et monochrome- au prix (exorbitant ?) de 200 000 Francs. Serge est dermatologue. Et amateur d'art moderne. N'en déplaise à son ami Marc, ingénieur dans l'aéronautique, un homme plutôt impulsif aux idées bien arrêtées. Yvan, quant à lui, est maître dans l'art du consensus vaille que vaille, abonné à son psychothérapeute, et la grande affaire de sa vie, c'est son mariage imminent avec la nièce de son tout nouvel employeur. Très vite, la discussion entre amis au sujet du "chef d'œuvre" dégénère. A coups de sous-entendus, petites phrases assassines, et ripostes qui font mouche, les langues se délient, le ton monte, et les masques tombent…Yvan se décidera finalement à intervenir, et tentera de calmer les esprits… Une comédie enlevée, drôle et ironique à la fois, sur l’amitié, la liberté d'expression, les hommes et leurs valeurs, avec en toile de fond la critique artistique et son objectivité.
